“Investigating Fire & Explosion Events”

ABSTRACT:
This multi-media lesson is provided in three one hour sections covering the investigation of fire
and explosion events utilizing the two most widely accepted and court tested documents
published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). A description of the two
documents with respect to legal cases will be followed by descriptions of the science involved in
fires and explosions. Specific physical consequences of fire and explosion events will be
explained and case studies for each will be discussed among the class.
The first session will detail NFPA 921 “Guide for Fire & Explosion Investigations” and NFPA
1033 “Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator”. The instructor will provide
step by step descriptions of each document and present examples of how each has been used
in court to argue both plaintiff and defense cases. The presenter will also provide case
examples of how each document has been tested and accepted in court. This session includes
45 PowerPoint slides with one five minute video.
The second session will address the science involved with investigating fires, with focus on
understanding how different types of fire affect different types of building materials. The
instructor will provide tools to enable the students to identify the different types of fire in order to
identify the area that the fire originated. This session includes 50 PowerPoint slides and two five
minute videos.
The third session of this class will address the science involved with investigating explosions,
with focus on understanding how different types of explosions affect different types of building
materials. The instructor will provide tools to enable the students to identify the size of the
explosion based on analyzing the resultant damage. This session includes 40 PowerPoint slides
and four five minute videos.
